EH&S: Thermal Safety in PPE
Miners work in very challenging environments: extreme heat or cold, restricted ventilation, and cramped quarters. Managing miner safety and health is a complex process which must address thermal safety. Thermal safety in mine work must take into account the need to wear PPE, specifically a miner's helmet, while on the job site. The miner's personal safety, his job satisfaction, and the company's success are all very directly determined by proper compliance with OSHA and company safety regulations. That's why GelCool Systems helmet warming and cooling products are so important in mining.
In a recent study, Kimberly Clark found that one of the most commonly cited reasons for not wearing PPE was "too hot". Fully 87% of respondents at the ASSE National Safety Congress 2007 said "they had observed workers failing to wear PPE when they should have been" (ASSE Journal, February 2008).
Furthermore, the General Duty section of the Occupational Safety and Health Act requires that employers provide their workers with employment and a place of employment that are free from recognized hazards that have caused or are likely to cause death or serious injury.
PPE MUST PROVIDE A THERMAL COMFORT ADVANTAGE SO EMPLOYEES WANT TO WEAR IT
Employers Can No Longer Afford to Let PPE be a Burden
GelCool Systems products allow employers to improve compliance at all levels while making their employees more comfortable. Employees who are in poor physical condition as well as those in good condition should be protected from thermal extremes. In the summer they need protection from heat stress:
Protect Health - Heat illness is preventable and treatable before it is life threatening.
Improve Safety - Any heat stress can impair decision-making and coordination.
Increase Productivity - People work slower and less efficiently when they are suffering from heat stress.
Reduce Workman's Comp and Sick Days: Even the mildest forms of heat illness can cause related illnesses.
Improve Employee Satisfaction: Personnel are much more comfortable in hot and cold environments with GelCool Systems gel packs, and much more likely to wear their hard hat when they should be wearing it.
Utility workers, road workers, construction workers, factory workers: all need heat protection.
GelCool: The Cornerstone of a Thermal Safety Program
Reduce risk and protect your number one asset, your employees. Since most of your company's experience-base often resides in your older workers (who are more susceptible to heat illnesses), it is critical to protect their health. With baby-boomers retiring now, retaining skilled, dependable personnel is key. GelCool Systems help protect your most important workers. Also, with workplace insurance costs constantly on the rise, you can help reduce your exposure to workman's compensation and worker-initiated legal actions by having an active Thermal Safety Program in place.
Our system uses GelCool (TM) gel packs. These gel packs are worn in the upper helmet and keep your personnnel significantly warmer or cooler in the most challenging temperature environments. GelCool (TM) gel packs are worn from the beginning of the exposure to the extreme temperatures. Our core design principal is to maintain the approved fit and alignment of the hard hat. Our patent-pending self-sizing gel pack fits all hard hats. Our warmer/coolers are portable, highly durable, and work on both 12v and 110v power sources. They are ruggedized for use on work vehicles.
We use a shielding system that graduates the thermal flow over a long period of time, avoiding potential discomfort from too much immediate warming or cooling and providing a more uniform, lasting temperature. Our GelCool (TM) gel packs provide immediate, on-demand, long-duration warming or cooling.
All Employers are Looking for Ways to Ensure They Have the Safest, Most Satisfied, and Most Productive Employees
